Problem & Objective:

This proposed grant project addresses critical gaps in Orange County’s healthcare workforce pathways by aligning K12 education with community college programs to better prepare students for high-demand, middle-skill healthcare careers amid rapid technological change. The project responds to a significant regional shortage of skilled healthcare workers—with over 30,000 annual job openings projected—while targeting persistent equity gaps that limit access for underserved populations such as English learners, foster youth, and low-income students. By expanding dual enrollment, work-based learning, and industry-recognized certifications, updating curricula to include emerging technologies like AI and telemedicine, and providing targeted academic and wraparound supports, the project aims to improve completion rates, increase access to living-wage healthcare jobs, and create a more technologically proficient, diverse healthcare workforce aligned with the region’s Strong Workforce Program and labor market needs.

Plan & Strategies:

This work plan outlines a comprehensive strategy to develop and enhance healthcare career pathways for students in grades 7-12 within Orange County, with a strong focus on equitable access for underserved populations. Key initiatives include creating five new industry-aligned healthcare CTE pathways, integrating advanced technologies like AI into curriculum, expanding dual enrollment and work-based learning opportunities, and embedding industry-recognized certifications. The plan emphasizes professional development for teachers to ensure high-quality instruction, partnerships with healthcare providers for internships and mentorships, and targeted support services such as tutoring and counseling for English learners, foster youth, and low-income students. Expected outcomes include increased student certification rates, higher participation of underserved students, and improved career readiness, ultimately addressing regional healthcare workforce shortages and preparing students for high-demand, high-wage careers sustainably through community collaboration and ongoing support.
