Problem & Objective:

This grant project aims to address critical gaps in career awareness and pathway understanding among middle and high school students within a multi-city Orange County charter school network. Despite establishing a Pre-Apprenticeship course linked to high-demand sectors such as healthcare, social work, and early childhood education, younger students (7th-9th grades) show disengagement from career language and opportunities, limiting their long-term career readiness. The project will develop and expand Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship programs, aligned with regional labor market demands and community college offerings, to provide clear, accessible pathways to high-wage, high-skill careers. Key components include a part-time Pre-Apprenticeship teacher, enhanced curriculum for early career exploration, internships with mentoring, and strong industry partnerships to facilitate hands-on learning and certification. A particular focus on equity aims to increase participation and success among underserved populations—such as students with disabilities, low-income, and Hispanic students—through targeted outreach, multilingual resources, academic supports, and addressing barriers like transportation. The project is strategically aligned with the region’s Strong Workforce Program Plan and Labor Market Information to ensure student outcomes meet regional employment needs and support long-term social mobility.

Plan & Strategies:

This K14 Pathway Quality Strategies Work Plan outlines a comprehensive approach to enhance student success from middle school through postsecondary education by focusing on four key areas: Curriculum and Instruction, College and Career Exploration, Postsecondary Transition and Completion, and Work-Based Learning. It includes funding for a Pre-Apprenticeship teacher to develop and facilitate apprenticeship programs, the implementation of a hands-on STEM career exploration curriculum aligned with local labor market needs, and targeted workshops for students and families to increase awareness of career pathways, apprenticeships, and financial aid. The plan emphasizes equitable access, particularly for underserved and special populations, through accommodations, mentorship by diverse professionals, and partnerships with local colleges and employers. Expected outcomes include increased enrollment and completion rates in CTE and apprenticeship programs, improved student engagement and graduation rates, expanded dual enrollment opportunities, and greater participation in paid internships, all measured through detailed tracking and feedback mechanisms.
