The “Expanding the C’s of Career Education” project aims to bridge the gap between student career readiness and the regional workforce needs in Orange County by expanding access to Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways aligned with high-demand sectors such as Business and Entrepreneurship, Health, and Energy, Construction, and Utilities. Leveraging data from the Orange County Center of Excellence and the Strong Workforce Program Regional Plan, the project targets critical workforce shortages and equity gaps, particularly among underrepresented student populations like English Learners, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities. Key strategies include increasing dual enrollment and articulation agreements with community colleges, expanding work-based learning opportunities (internships, competitions), and promoting industry-recognized certifications. By strengthening alignment with community college partners and providing targeted outreach and wraparound supports, the project seeks to equip students with the skills, credentials, and experiences necessary to secure high-wage, high-demand careers, while addressing systemic inequities in access and completion of CTE programs.
The “C’s of Career Education” project will strategically use K12 SWP funds to expand college and career exploration opportunities across Tustin Unified School District, targeting over 7,000 high school students and 60 CTE teachers. Key initiatives include hiring a College and Career Counseling Coordinator and a Work-Based Learning Specialist to guide students toward high-demand, high-wage career pathways; increasing dual enrollment and articulation agreements with Irvine Valley College; developing a new asynchronous Healthcare Operational Support Services course; and expanding access to internships, industry certifications, and competitions. Special emphasis is placed on equity by offering transportation, targeted counseling, and wraparound support services for disproportionately impacted students, including English Learners and students with disabilities. Partner organizations like EXP will support work-based learning access and mentorship, while teacher stipends will fund summer internships and professional development. These efforts are designed to close regional skills gaps, increase socio-economic mobility, and build sustainable, industry-aligned CTE pipelines that lead to postsecondary success and employment.
