Problem & Objective:

The Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) seeks K12 Strong Workforce Program funding to launch a Design & Media Conservatory that addresses significant barriers faced by underrepresented students in accessing California’s booming creative economy, particularly in the high-paying, rapidly growing Design & Media sector. Despite strong regional industry demand and lucrative job prospects, many students—especially those from low-income, special needs, or non-English speaking backgrounds—lack access to costly professional-grade technology and training. OCSA’s new program will provide equitable access to cutting-edge equipment, dual-enrollment courses with Santa Ana College, industry certifications, internships, and mentorships, preparing students not just as artists but as critical, visionary designers equipped for workforce success. With a focus on inclusivity, real-world application, and collaboration, the conservatory aims to serve 200 students within five years, helping close equity gaps while aligning education with industry needs in sectors like entertainment, product design, and UI/UX, ultimately empowering diverse students to enter high-skill, well-paying creative careers without the barriers of traditional artistic training costs.

Plan & Strategies:

The work plan for OCSA’s Design & Media Conservatory, funded by the K12 Strong Workforce Program, focuses on providing equitable access to high-quality curriculum and instruction that integrates emerging technologies with design thinking across disciplines like entertainment, animation, product design, and UI/UX. The program aims to overcome barriers to entry by supplying professional-grade equipment and software directly in classrooms, enabling students—including those from marginalized backgrounds and with special needs—to gain critical problem-solving and visionary design skills without needing costly outside training. Through a close partnership with Santa Ana College, the conservatory will offer dual-enrollment courses aligned with college curricula and pathways to industry certifications, preparing students for high-demand, well-paying jobs in California’s creative economy. Starting with 90 students in 2023-24 and growing to nearly 200 by 2027-28, the program will also extend benefits to related departments and community arts programs. Additionally, students will engage with industry professionals through guest lectures, mentorships, internships, and events like Speak Week, fostering real-world connections and career readiness in an inclusive, collaborative environment.
